Members of Edgware and Hendon Reform Synagogue (EHRS) and supporters of Chai Cancer Care came together for a special fundraising walk, ‘Step Up For Charity’, raising over £9,500 for the organisations.
The funds raised will go directly towards providing essential community care services at EHRS, as well as supporting individuals and families affected by cancer.
Participants had the option of completing either a one-mile or five-mile route, with the walk taking place in bright, sunny weather. Walkers of all ages took part, creating a powerful atmosphere of unity, resilience and generosity. The day was made possible thanks to a wide network of supporters whose contributions helped ensure its success.
The walk was inspired by EHRS member Donna, who organised the event as a way of giving back after receiving vital support from both EHRS and Chai Cancer Care, following the loss of her mother and her own diagnosis with bowel cancer shortly afterwards.
The event was also used to raise awareness of the importance of early detection in colorectal cancer, where NHS screening currently applies to those aged 50–74 in England.
Alongside the walk, additional fundraising efforts boosted the total. Melissa and her daughter Lucy organised a bake sale as part of Lucy’s Bat Mitzvah project, with all proceeds donated to the charities.
Val Joseph, Head of Community Care and Wellbeing at EHRS, said: “It was wonderful to be part of something so positive and for such a worthy cause, which really brought our community together in these difficult times.”
