Our Relationship with Israel

The Movement for Progressive Judaism is a Zionist movement – committed to there being a Jewish, pluralist and democratic State in the historic homeland of Israel.

With the formation of the Movement for Progressive Judaism, our leaders, rabbis and cantors are now engaged in formulating a detailed framework around our relationship with Israel.

As this crucial work develops, this page outlines some guiding principles of the Movement for Progressive Judaism drawn from previous writings and our prayer books:

The Jewish people and Jewish religion have a long and historic connection to the land of Israel. As the only Jewish State in the world, many of our members are in relationship with Israel, including through friends and family living there.

We understand that for the State of Israel to flourish, there needs to be friendship and compassion amongst its people – and with its neighbours – so that there can be lasting peace on its borders and in all of its homes.

Our Zionism is bound to the dream of Israel as a Jewish and democratic state: living in peace with its neighbours; implementing the prophetic ideals of liberty and justice; and treating all its inhabitants with dignity and equality.

We remain committed to two safe and secure states – Israel and Palestine – as the most viable solution to the present situation.

There is, and always has been, a wide diversity of views and visions towards Israel within Progressive Judaism and among our members. This is welcome. Judaism has at its heart the idea that we grapple with one another, that we are stronger by having that conversation.

We actively work alongside and support our partners at the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism (IMPJ), as well as all those who share the goals and values outlined here.
