The fabulous gathering of those who support East London and Essex Liberal Synagogue on Volunteers’ Shabbat
East London and Essex Liberal Synagogue (ELELS) marked National Volunteers’ Week with a special Volunteers’ Shabbat celebrating the many people who give their time and energy to support community life.
The service, led by Rabbi Richard Jacobi and ELELS Musical Director Mich Sampson, recognised volunteers across every area of synagogue activity from governance, finance and religious life to education, pastoral care, security, building maintenance and hospitality.

The congregation also celebrated the forthcoming 90th birthday of Life Vice President June Bradbury, a longstanding volunteer and much-loved member of the community. June was called up for the Torah blessings and presented with cards, gifts and a cake.
June said: “The service was so meaningful and I enjoyed it immensely. I was also deeply moved by the amazing attention poured on me for my forthcoming 90th birthday. I was truly blown away by the kindness.”
Stewart Spivack, Honorary President of ELELS, explained how volunteers are vital to the community.
He said: “Our synagogue would not be able to run without the help of volunteers who do so much to organise events, maintain finance records, hold Council meetings, help in the kitchen, support our Religion School, provide pastoral care and assist with security. It has always been a joy to be part of the wonderful group of people who give freely of their time.”
Jen Barnett, Chair of Council, added: “One of the great strengths of our community is the number of people who give their time, energy and support to help make ELELS the special place it is.
“Our Volunteers’ Shabbat was dedicated to celebrating the many volunteers in our community who make such a difference each and every day.”
The event also encouraged members to consider volunteering in the future, highlighting the vital role volunteers play in helping ELELS thrive and grow.
