Voices for Prophetic Judaism: Readings for Chanukah

9 December 2025 – 19 Kislev 5786 | Thought

Voices for Prophetic JudaismA new booklet of readings has been published for the eight nights of Chanukah, by Voices for Prophetic Judaism.

Titled Judiths for Justice, each evening a Progressive rabbi or cantor offers a reflection celebrating an inspirational Jewish woman of that name from past or present.

You can read/download/print it here.

Introducing the readings, Rabbi Gabriel Kanter-Webber, Rabbi Dr Judith Rosen-Berry and Rabbi Elli Tikvah Sarah write: “The historical account of Chanukah which focuses on a military victory against a mighty empire can be found in the two Books of Maccabees. And then there is the Book of Judith, the lesser-known story of a valiant woman whose courage and audacity also led to the defeat of the forces of persecution and tyranny.

“Inspired by the heroism of the original Judith, this booklet uncovers her story, her presence and her absence, and casts light on other Judiths for Justice, inviting us to reflect, night after night, on the role of courageous Jewish women in the pursuit of justice.”
