Dr Selwyn Goldthorpe, Chair of Southport & District Reform Synagogue, joined Merseyside’s civic and religious leaders at a reception with His Excellency Archbishop Miguel Buendia, Ambassador of the Holy See to the Court of St James’s (the Vatican’s ambassador to the UK).
The meeting focused on inspiring Merseyside’s citizens to work for the common good and human well-being, transcending political and religious ideology.
Selwyn also had the opportunity to discuss the work of the Southport Interfaith Group, for which he is secretary, and the efforts being made to build a more cohesive society following the riots in Southport two years earlier.
He said: “In Merseyside, we talk of a renewed vision of human society – one where, against a background of cultural divisiveness and fear, we affirm a bigger vision of a respectful society where all are equally valued and equally safe. Every religion upholds the values of compassion and justice, and all stand for the dignity of every person.”
The next interfaith event in the region will take place on 11 October, when a ‘Walk of Unity’ begins at Southport & District Reform Synagogue before visiting a church and the mosque. It will be a peaceful walk demonstrating that, together, we can build something that transcends our differences.
