The cheder children at Reading Liberal Jewish Community (RLJC) built a model shtetl as part of their learning about the history of the Jews in Eastern Europe.
In addition to making the model, the children wrote stories about their shtetl and learned some Yiddish words and phrases.
Cheder pupil Jesse, aged 10, said: “Making the shtetl was a very peaceful, happy time, everybody quietly doing their own thing, except at the end when we were putting the exhibition together. Then everyone was rushing around. It was especially nice seeing my brother busy doing his own thing, as he is only five.”
Bertie, aged 11, added: “I think our knowledge about the shtetl brings it to life!”
