Scotland now has an additional Progressive Jewish offering after a new service was launched in Glasgow’s West End led by Hannah Green, a PhD student at the University of Glasgow.

The Hillhead Progressive gathering was attended by people all ages. The plan is for monthly services, designed not to conflict with those held at Glasgow Reform Synagogue (GRS), with the next event already scheduled for Friday 7 August.

Hannah said: “It was really lovely to pray and sing together, occasionally creating new tunes by accident, whilst being so near home.”

Paul Ginsberg, who has helped with some of the logistics, added: “We hope that this provides a good additional way for people in Glasgow to welcome in Shabbat.”

While the venture is currently completely independent of GRS and The Movement for Progressive, both are supportive.

One attendee was Aline Meyer Oliveira, who commented: “I am very happy that myself and my two year old were able to experience Jewish life – both spiritually through davening, and from being with a supportive, respectful and welcoming community.”
