Noeleen Cohen has been elected as the incoming Chair of Trustees of The Movement for Progressive Judaism (MPJ).

Noeleen, who has more than two decades of experience as a Board Trustee and Chair for a range of charities, was elected by the representatives of MPJ member communities at an Extraordinary General Meeting held on 29 September. She will serve as Chair Designate alongside current MPJ Chair Dr Ed Kessler MBE for two months before formally taking on the role at the Movement’s AGM on 2 December.

Noeleen grew up in South Africa, moving to London in the early 1990s. She built a successful career in strategic marketing and communications, before transitioning into the voluntary sector, where she has worked for more than 20 years.

A member of Alyth (North Western Reform Synagogue), Noeleen is currently a Board member of MPJ, having previously served on its Advisory and Interim Boards ahead of the Movement’s formation through the unification of Liberal and Reform Judaism. She also currently chairs the New Israel Fund (UK) and serves as Vice-Chair of Citizens UK.

Noeleen said: “I am honoured and excited to be taking on the role at a time when the Progressive Jewish values of inclusivity, connection and community are needed now more than ever.

“Ed has been an inspiring leader and, together with MPJ Co-Leads Rabbi Charley Baginsky and Rabbi Josh Levy and the MPJ Board, I look forward to continuing his work in building a vibrant, resilient and future-focused Movement that welcomes people and inspires generations to come.”

Ed, who plans to remain deeply involved with MPJ, added: “Noeleen played a hugely important role when we were creating and establishing The Movement for Progressive Judaism and it’s been a privilege to work with her on the Boards I chaired throughout this process. I am able to stand down knowing that she will take things forward for the Movement and am delighted to support her, both personally and professionally.”

The election was warmly welcomed by MPJ Co-Leads, Rabbi Josh Levy and Rabbi Charley Baginsky. They said: “Noeleen brings an exceptional depth of experience and judgement, adding real strength to our leadership as we build the Movement’s future together.

“We are also deeply grateful to Dr Ed Kessler for his leadership and for all he has given to bringing MPJ into being. We will pay fuller tribute to his contribution in the coming months.”
