Non-Member Funerals

We are proud that The Movement for Progressive Judaism conducts Non-Member Funerals – providing a sympathetic, first class and inclusive Jewish funeral conducted by a Progressive rabbi.

One of the most common questions we receive is how to have a Jewish funeral if you are not a member of a Progressive Judaism community.

Some people contact us towards the end of their life, when they are starting to think about a funeral, and sometimes we are contacted by families after a loved one has died.

The Movement for Progressive Judaism can help with burial, woodland burial and cremation – providing a sympathetic, first class and inclusive Jewish funeral conducted by a Progressive rabbi or cantor.

We are also able to arrange for couples to be buried together, including for couples where one partner is not Jewish.

Under the auspices of the Liberal Judaism Burial Scheme, burials of non-members can take place at Edgwarebury Cemetery in Edgware, GreenAcres Chiltern, JJBS Cemetery Cheshunt or the Western Cemetery Cheshunt. Cremations can take place at any London crematorium. We are also able to assist people outside of London.

Non-Jewish partners of Jewish people may be buried in all Liberal sections at Edgwarebury, at GreenAcres and at the JJBS Cemetery Cheshunt, providing that the Jewish partner is/will be buried there too in the same plot.

Costs change annually. Currently they are:

Edgwarebury – £8,775
Western Cemetery Cheshunt – £8,775
JJBS Cemetery Cheshunt (Lawn) – £8,775
JJBS Cemetery Cheshunt (Woodland) – £14,255
GreenAcres Chiltern – £16,260

At Edgwarebury, JJBS Cemetery Cheshunt and GreenAcres Chiltern we bury in ‘double depth’ and at the Western Cemetery Cheshunt we offer the option to reserve the neighbouring grave for a partner or spouse. In cases of couples, please note that the family is not purchasing the plot but only the right for the second partner to be buried alongside their loved one – either as a non-member or as a member if they decide to become one.

A Progressive rabbi or cantor will conduct the funeral, taking time to get to know the family so that it can be conducted in a fitting manner. Sometimes families request a certain rabbi or cantor, which we will do our best to accommodate but cannot guarantee.

We can also provide a Progressive rabbi or cantor for shivah services but that is not included in the cost of the funeral. Clergy charge around £250 for this.

Stone settings are then usually held about one year after the funeral and again the Movement for Progressive Judaism will help you arrange this.

Three stone masons are authorised to carry out work in our cemeteries, and we will provide all their details upon request so that you can arrange for the stone to be made. The cost of this should be discussed and settled directly with the stone mason. We can provide a Progressive rabbi to officiate at the stone setting and this costs about £250.
