Steve Reed MP at The Wimbledon Synagogue

Wimbledon Synagogue welcomed the Rt Hon Steve Reed MP, Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government to their Shabbat service. It was part of a government initiative to engage directly with faith communities across the UK, highlighting the vital role communities play in building bridges and social cohesion.

Before and after Shabbat prayers, the Minister spoke with community members, hearing their take on how faith groups contribute to unity in society.

Rabbi Adrian Schell delivered a powerful sermon that drew on the biblical story of Jacob and Esau’s reunion. He challenged both the congregation and the government to resist the politics of division and instead embrace reconciliation and understanding. He said: “This is the Torah’s antidote to the divisive politics of our age. To see the face of the opponent, the stranger, the one we fear, and to recognise in that face the presence of the Divine. We either build monsters, or we recognise the face of God.”

The MP’s visit underlined the importance of dialogue between government and faith communities. It not only showed respect for our traditions but also affirmed the role our communities play in shaping a more inclusive society.
