Newcastle Reform Synagogue Iftar 1The first ever Newcastle Reform Synagogue (NRS) Iftar has been described as “warm”, “joyful” and a “huge success” by all those who attended.

The Ramadan fast-breaking event brought together more than 100 guests from local Jewish, Muslim, Hindu, Christian and Baha’i communities, along with civic and communal leaders. Among those attending were the Lord Lieutenant, the Lord Mayor, representatives from the Police and Fire Service, the Vice-Chair of the Board of Deputies of British Jews, and many members of the synagogue itself.

From the outset, the atmosphere was celebratory, with guests chatting together as they arrived and took their seats. Tugay Talcin from the Dialogue Society helped set the tone with a performance on the Turkish flute, followed by sincere words of appreciation from the Lord Lieutenant Lucy Winskill and Jeremy Michaelson. A short cello recital was then given by professional musician Talia Turnbull.

A quiet prayer space had been set aside for those who wished to use it, while Maariv was led by Benny Ross. As the sun set, dates and water were shared to mark the end of the fast before the doors were opened to reveal a vegetarian buffet prepared entirely by Brenda Dinsdale. Tagine, chickpea curry, dahl, samosas, salads, rice, potatoes, breads, chutney and raita were quickly enjoyed by guests, followed by desserts including gulab jamun, chai cake, polenta cake and fruit platters.

Informality was a key feature of the evening and, as people shared their meal, interfaith speakers including Rev Dr Sarah Moon, Nitin Shukla, Mehrban Sadiq and Mohammed Suleiman spoke movingly about their faiths and what they meant to them.

Caroline Boobis, NRS Council member for Inclusion and Kullanu, said: “All of the guests without exception expressed delight and pleasure at being a part of such a harmonious event, with many reflecting that in a troubled and divisive world it is the small positive things we do that can unite us, irrespective of religion or beliefs.”

Special thanks were given to Brenda and Brian Dinsdale for the catering, Ofra Ben Porat Ram for organising the guest administration, and the Board of Deputies of British Jews for generously funding the event through its Optimistic Alliance project.
