A large congregation turned out to celebrate with Stevenage Liberal Synagogue (SLS) stalwarts Hilary and John Vogler on their Diamond Wedding anniversary.
Married at Dalston United Synagogue in 1966, the couple have two sons and three grandchildren. John originates from Hackney and Hilary from Highbury. They lived initially in Chingford, then Golders Green and Mill Hill, before eventually settling slightly further north in Welwyn.
Both had always been members of Orthodox synagogues but, encouraged by their granddaughter, they joined Stevenage Liberal Synagogue and found a new family.
Still highly involved, Hilary currently holds both the Secretary and Treasurer portfolios for the community.
SLS’s Rabbi Danny Rich and Chair Linda Paice led the Shabbat service, which was made extra special as Hilary and John’s grandson joined on Zoom from his home in Australia.
A magnificent challah shaped as a ’60’ was a centrepiece at kiddush, followed by the whole congregation enjoying a celebratory lunch.
Hilary thanked everyone involved and quoted from one of the many cards they received: “Love is finding that one special person to annoy for the rest of your life!”
